about.

"I used to hide the imperfections in the wood. Now, I highlight them."

From his early beginnings of crafting a wagon with no wheels at the age of six, to becoming a seasoned builder of homes for over 32 years, Gary has always been deeply connected to the art of creation. After relocating to Oregon in the 1970s from Wisconsin, he purchased a lathe and began following his true passion: woodworking. In 2019, he founded Blue Door Woodcraft, where he merges his extensive experience with his love for nature's beauty.

Specializing in turning unique bowls, Gary views each piece as both a functional work of art and a tribute to the natural world. By using locally rescued trees and incorporating inlay materials such as seashells he personally collects, semi-precious stones, and epoxy resin, he ensures that every bowl is a one-of-a-kind creation. As a commitment to sustainability, he processes his own wood and uses only food-safe finishes.

The name "Blue Door Woodcraft" embodies the spiritual experience of Gary's craft, while the logo incorporates the handprint of his grandson who helped build the woodshop.

Having worked with over 14 species of wood and counting, Gary continues to find awe in the diverse grain patterns revealed when turning a bowl.

Each bowl is more than just an object; it's a narrative of the wood's journey and a celebration of nature's intricate beauty.

His craft allows him to honor the unique story of each piece, turning it into a functional masterpiece that invites a deeper connection with the natural world.
